They were completely terrestrial, walking with a semi-erect gait similar to modern crocodilians. Their brains resembled those of reptiles, lacking an expanded neocortex, and they likely had binocular vision, a parietal eye, a keen sense of smell, and possibly a rudimentary eardrum. They were probably inertial homeotherms rather than true endotherms, making them less active than contemporary therocephalians and cynodonts. Their hunting strategy for large prey likely involved a bite-and-retreat tactic: ambushing, delivering a debilitating bite, then following at a safe distance until the prey weakened, after which they would grapple and deliver a killing bite. Gorgonopsians had heterodont teeth, with five upper incisors and four lower incisors, and elongated upper (and sometimes lower) canines. Postcanine teeth were reduced or absent. Teeth grew continuously, and replacement canines were present to maintain functionality.

Gorgonopsians are significant as the dominant terrestrial predators of the late Permian, filling large predatory niches after the Capitanian extinction eliminated dinocephalians and most basal therocephalians.
