Hadrosauridae

Hadrosauridae, from Ancient Greek ἁδρός (hadrós) 'stout, thick' and σαύρα (saúra) 'lizard', is a family of ornithischian dinosaurs informally referred to as duck-billed dinosaurs. This group is known for the flat duck-bill appearance of the bones in their snouts. The ornithopod family, which includes genera such as Edmontosaurus and Parasaurolophus, was a common group of herbivores during the Late Cretaceous Period. Hadrosaurids are descendants of the Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous iguanodontian dinosaurs and had a similar body layout. They were among the most dominant herbivores during the Late Cretaceous in Asia and North America, and during the close of the Cretaceous several lineages dispersed into Europe, Africa, and South America.

Lore & Background

The latter would come to be recognized as the first recognized hadrosaur specimens. Around the same time, geologist William Parker Foulke was informed of large bones uncovered by farmer John E. Hopkins some twenty years earlier. Leidy briefly suggested the animal was likely amphibious, a view that would dominate for over a century. Further discoveries came from the East, and Edward Drinker Cope led an expedition to the Judith River Formation. Cope studied hadrosaur jaws and concluded the teeth were fragile, supposing the animals fed largely on soft water plants. Research continued in the Judith River area but yielded mostly fragmentary remains. They agreed with the semi-aquatic nature but re-evaluated Cope's weak-jaw idea, finding the teeth rooted in strong batteries continuously replaced. Ostrom challenged the semi-aquatic view, proposing hadrosaurs were capable terrestrial animals that browsed on conifers, though he remained uncertain about the paddle-like hand and tail.
