Hesperornis is a genus of cormorant-like ornithuran bird that lived during the Campanian age, and possibly into the early Maastrichtian age, of the Late Cretaceous period. One of the lesser-known discoveries of paleontologist O. C. Marsh in the late 19th century Bone Wars, it was an early find in the history of avian paleontology. Fossils have been recovered from Late Cretaceous marine limestones in Kansas and marine shales in Canada, with nine recognized species, eight from North America and one from Russia.

The skeleton was large, wingless, and had strong legs, which Marsh considered indicative of a diving species, though it lacked a head. He named it Hesperornis regalis, meaning 'regal western bird.' The following year, one of Marsh's students, Thomas H. Russell, found a nearly perfect skeleton with enough of the head intact to reveal that the jaws were lined with teeth. Marsh eventually received parts of 50 Hesperornis specimens, strengthening the case for an evolutionary link between reptiles and birds.
