Ichthyornis, whose name refers to its fish-like vertebrae, was a genus of toothed, seabird-like ornithuran that lived during the Late Cretaceous in North America. Its fossils come mainly from chalk deposits in Alberta, Alabama, Kansas, New Mexico, Saskatchewan, and Texas—areas once covered by the Western Interior Seaway—and range from the Cenomanian to the Campanian ages. It was a common part of the Niobrara Formation’s animal community, with many specimens collected. The genus played a key role in understanding bird evolution: it was the first prehistoric bird relative found with teeth, and Charles Darwin pointed out its importance early in the development of evolutionary theory. Today, it remains significant as one of the few Mesozoic ornithurans known from more than just a handful of fossils.

Ichthyornis was a seabird-like ornithuran from the Late Cretaceous, roughly the size of a pigeon, though its fossils show considerable size variation, with some individuals smaller and others notably larger than the type specimen. Its skeletal wingspan, excluding feathers, was around that of a modern bird of similar proportions. The genus is named for its fish-like vertebrae, which are concave on both the front and back surfaces. Its most famous feature is its teeth, which were restricted to the middle portion of both jaws; the tips of the jaws were toothless and covered by a compound beak made of several distinct plates, resembling an albatross’s beak rather than the single keratin sheet of most modern birds. The teeth were flattened, curved backward at the tips, lacked serrations, and widened toward the base, set in a groove similar to those of marine reptiles. Its wings and breastbone were modern in appearance, indicating strong flight capability, and it matured to adulthood in a relatively short, continuous process. An endocast study revealed a brain similar to that of *Archaeopteryx* and non-avian theropods, but its palate was remarkably convergent with modern neognath birds. Its fossils are common in the Niobrara Formation and have been found in chalks across Alberta, Alabama, Kansas, New Mexico, Saskatchewan, and Texas, deposited in the Western Interior Seaway from the Cenomanian to Campanian ages.

Ichthyornis remains important today as one of the few Mesozoic ornithurans known from more than a few specimens, and it represents one of the closest non-avian relatives of modern birds. Its combination of modern-looking wings and breastbone with reptilian teeth provided early and powerful support for Darwin's theory of evolution.
